Overtones and experimental voices, psych-folk and psych --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grading in playlist done by lifting out tracks. *ok **g ***vg **** perf ***** can’t get better than this/a must-have with ° for some tracks better & ‘ for upgrade for certain reasons --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. intro with overtones and voice experiments : * Pal.Of Light K.Leimer : The Useless Lesson (US,2007)***’ Tr.2, “Nonadaptive layers-part 2” 6 min (shortened) 4 Neo-classical music with contemporary overtone-based ideas as fundament for ambient-minimalist compositions. The pleasant confusion between different coloured instruments I think is a strong and attractive, nice to listen to idea. Review : http://psychemusic.org/prog19.html#anchor_165 * Leo Denis Beuret : Alone (CH,2008)***’ Tr.3, “MP-03” 4 min (shortened) 3 Interesting combination of live electronics with trombone (improvisation). Amazing how many colours and sonic shapes trombone-based improvisations can get. Review : http://psychemusic.org/jazz.html#anchor_170 * Gushpunk Quetev Meriri (IS,2008)***° Tr.3, (fragment) 3 min 10 Sadly, I only have time fr a small fragment of this avant-prog improvisational album. This small part includes a small vocal experiment during an improvisation, reminding me off Demetrio Stratos’ vocal experiments. On the CD are also calm avant-improvisations with Middle Eastern styled guitar,.. New review : http://psychemusic.org/Israel.html#anchor_44 * Cramps/Edel Demetrio Stratos : Suonare La Voce –DVD-(I,pub.2006)**°'' I just added a review of this documentary on Strato’s vocal experiments. Besides, he also interprets here some Antonin Artaud’s sonic poem. I can’t recommend it. It’s in Italian and it’s compiled a bit too much with less essential interviews. Only the adaptation of some demonstrations by Demetrio Stratos are worth checking out, although these fragments are part and not separate from the documentary. PS. Demetrio Stratos is most known for his contributions (singing, organ) to the progressive jazz-rock band Area. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/DemetrioStratos.html#anchor_25 * Esoteric Claire Hamill : Voices (US,1985,re.2008)*°° Tr.1, “Awaken…Larkrise” 4 min (shortened) 3 Claire’s personal ideas of what are New Age vocal arrangements from… This was something creative and new, while there’s also something in the approach which can also more easily lead to weaker examples. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/ClaireHamill.html * Hand/Eye Jessica Constable & Philippe Gelda : The Vine and Vein Collection (UK/F,2008)*°° Tr.9, “Cool things 1 & 2” 4 min 17 Vocal improvisations with a jazz background in combination with weird, out-of- this-world organ ideas. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/JessicaConstable.html * Sub Rosa Antonin Artaud : Pour En Finir avec le Jugement de Dieu (F,1947,re.1996)*****/**’’’ Even when this is a terrific artwork, for literature and filosophy, and this is interesting to know this is from the 40s, at the same time this is hardly listenable for those who do not understand French. Also, some parts will be felt like random madness, for those who can’t follow the context, background purpose of its creation or the mind of the creator... New review : http://singersong.homestead.com/antoninartaud.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. new psych-folk releases : * Fire Museum Axa Hour Of Dora Bleu : Clones Of Eros (CAN,2008)**°° Tr.1, “Marked for memory” 12 min -29 Cam and moody band improvisations around song contexts from former From Quagmire (VHF)’s singer. A brilliant opener for this album. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview24.html#anchor_907 * Eclipse Marissa Nadler : The Ivy and the clover (US,2006)***°° Tr.7, “Conjouring Spirit worlds” 6 min -35 This is Gothic girl/acidfolk singer’s Marissa Nadler’s latest release. It’s nowhere at any list, but this release exists, and is available at source. This is the most special track, an outtake from the previous release sessions, with Greg Weeks and Helena Espvall. Marissa currently is working on a new album. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/MarissaNadler.html#anchor_89 * Fire Museum Arborea (US,rec.2007,pub.2008)***° Tr.1, “Forwarned” 3 min Tr.3, “Ides of March” 3 min Tr.7, “Leaves among the ruins” 6 min (shortened-due to time limitations-) Tr.9, “Swan” 4 min 16-52 Arborea’s female singer can withstand a comparison to M.Nadler. On Arborea’s first full album they are more or less acidfolk band, like Mountain-folk. These are some quieter moments fitting well into the show. Track 7 is some solo guitar picking piece. A recommended group to check out. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview16.html#anchor_470 * Bird Beth Jeans Houghton -EP- (UK,2008)***° Tr.3, “Sink” 4 min Tr.4, “Cruel Francis” 3 min 7-59 Recommended vinyl EP from a recommended series of similar styled EPs. I am sure for some this will sound pretty close to Vashti Bunyan. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview24.html#anchor_900 * private Reverie : Shakespeare, la donna, il sogno (I,2008)***° Tr.9, “Sonetto” 4 min Tr.11, “Kiam Alvenos La Fino” 4 min 8 -67 Nice art-chamber folk band with a conceptual release situated in Renaissance England. This remains my favourite tracks. Last track in in Esperanto. 2 classic songs if you ask me. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.homestead.com/acidfolkreview19.html#anchor_661 * RD The New Age : All Around (US,rec.1967,pub.2008)****° Tr.2, “Sun Song Ridge” 8 min -73 Raga-like acidfolk “Classic” BUT without having been published before, except for some previous LP edition some years back. Only Pat Kilroy’s first release from 1966 knew a limited reissue before. Also Susan’s later band, The Habbibiyya, knew a reissue recently. This last band pretty much sounds like a logical next step of inspirations. This track gives very much an idea. This stretched acoustic track with improvisation skills and Indian and perhaps Sufi inspirations was rather unusual for its time. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/thenewage.html * Rev-Ola John Berberian and the Rock East Ensemble : Middle Eastern Rock (ARM/US,1969re.2008)****° Like the title says, a classic of Middle Eastern fusion of ethno-folk traditions with fusing rock elements. New review : http://psychemusic.org/JohnBerberian.html * Acrobat Knocker Jungle (UK,1970,re.2008)**°° Tr.1, “Don’t know why” 3 min -76 Rather nice folk(psych)pop song album, with a few brighter moments and an interesting potential. However, the great contributing talents (like Tony Scott from Tir Na Nog/Magna Carta) could not do much to improve the more busker-like more “normal” cores in many songs. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/knockerjungle.html#anchor_324 * Sky Station Tenjo Sajiki : Throw Away The Books, Let's Go Out on the Street (JAP,1970)***°° Tr.5, 4 min Tr.6, 1 min Tr.7, 1 min Tr.14,3 min Tr.17,2 min 11-87 A great, strong and socially mobilized-emotional conceptual music piece, somewhat comparable to their ’74 album. Here it sounds more like a filmic music session, mobilizing people’s expressions on the streets, in bars, on stage. Being acid folk mostly, it is also with a few fine progressive outburst moments with a progressive rock band. Review : http://psychemusic.org/japanreviews2.html * Sky Station Tenjo Sajiki : Barmon (JAP,1972)*°' Here the gay and trans-sexual community is mobilized. This is done with so much wordniness, and with some provoking elements (like a Hitler speech on the background or brass version of a Japanese traditional) I am not able to appreciate it. So it’s my least appreciated J.Caesar/Tejo Sajiki album so far. Review : Review : http://psychemusic.org/japanreviews2.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. new psych albums.. * Void Bliss : Return to bliss (US,1969,re.2008)***° Tr.5, “Reach out and touch you” 6 min Tr.7, “Hippies, cops and a bunch of rocks” 4 min Tr.10, “Just can’t win” 2 min 12-99 Three favourite tracks from this rather good and slightly hard-edged (psych)rock band. Review : http://psychemusic.org/psych.html#anchor_229 * Esoteric Curved Air : Live (UK,1975,re.2008)***°° Tr.4, “Proposition” 9 min -105 About time for an old classic group. This track is a must-have heard, perfect and brilliant moment of this classic band/group. The instrumental part consists of extraordinary attractively played sequenced guitars, leading to a part with some sequenced-melodic keyboards parts. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/psych3.html#anchor_273 * Shadoks Days (DK,1970,re.2008)****' Tr.2, “Discovery in blue” 5 min -110 For me a classic prog/psychrock album from Danmark, with intelligent moves and theme breaks and fine group sound. This is perhaps not the best song, but the track that gives an idea of the band’s approach. Some fine Hammond organ (in a prog/psychrock) context on this release. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/DANMARK.html#anchor_233 * 12 Apostles The Crystal Sun : Landscape (UK,2008)***° Tr.3, “Landscape” 7 min (shortened) 4 Tr.4, “Orffyreus’Wheel” 4 min -8 118 An original new prog band. A mixture of rather relaxed parts and a bit wave- rockier parts with some spoken word. I had to shorten both tracks. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/psych4.html#anchor_299 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. hard-edged… * Transubstans The Chair (S,2008)***° Tr.1, 5 min -end Straight-energetic, good heavy rock with a 70s comparison : “rocking hard” heavy rock! Review : http://psychemusic.org/sweden4.html#anchor_215 * Recordheaven Blowback : Morning Wood (S,2008)***' (Tr.2, “Sleeping Widow” 5 min) Stoner heavy rock… I had no time to add this as well.. Review : http://psychemusic.org/sweden4.html#anchor_207 * demo Dasputnik : Blatta Caverna EP (FIN,2008)**’ Promising, pretty young band of spacerock & psych-rockers. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/FINLAND_GROUPS.html#anchor_94 * Rump Svartbag (DK,2008)**' Loop-based shoegazed instrumental music with a more-or-less-psych effect. Review : http://psychemusic.org/prog16.html#anchor_191 * Nasoni Vibravoid : Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out (D,2008)**’ Also a rather simple compositional approach here, but with often technically effective sound production : Spacepsych & psych. Review : http://psychemusic.org/prog22.html#anchor_302 * Slowburn Black Sun Ensemble : Across The sea of Id : The Way To Eden (US,2008)*** Calm evolution which is worth check out.. Perhaps best to experience as a one- take listen from start to finish.
