This is my favourite track. Review (soon) : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar11.html#anchor_332 * private The End Springs : vol II (US,2006)***° Tr.2, “The Smoke Fire Train” 3 min Tr.3, “Song For Ranos” 3 min -12 First chosen track is a nice folk dance tune on 2 acoustic guitar and playful kind of finger-ticking clicking rhythm. Second chosen track is a double guitar piece with an echoing whistling like the wind. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar11.html#anchor_332 * Folkways The Entourage Music and Theatre Ensemble (US,1973)***° Tr.1, “Piece for E-flat Soprano saxophone, guitar, and thumb piano” 5 min Tr.4, “Michael’s Song” 8 min 13-25 Improvised multi-art form stage music. On this first album they sound a bit like early Third Earband. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue5.html#anchor_269 * Folkways The Entourage Music & Theatre Ensemble : The Neptune Collection (US,1975)***°’ Tr.1, “Neptune Rising” 6 min Tr.3, “Euphoric Bells” 4 min Tr.5, “Nature Spirits” 7 min 17-42 More worked out guitar from a new and extra member makes this second album more structured, and also more unique. At this stage, the group also have gained more experience with the concept and group. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue5.html#anchor_269 * Karma Hippieology vol.1 : Den Lille Prins / Foreningen Til Livets Beskyttelse (DK,1971/1972,re.2005)***° LP “Foreningen…” : Tr.1, “Elverkongen” 7 min Tr.8, “Folketinget” 2 min 9 -51 2 albums on one. The first one is a nice, somewhat improvised hippie-folkpsych album, lead by a female vocalist, Susan Hamilton. The last track proves the condition of mind of the band during this recording (-psychedelic-). Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/reissue5.html#anchor_268 * Str.Attr. Autumn Shade : Ezra Moon (US,2007)**° Tr.1, “Sparrow” 1 min Tr.9, “Red” 4 min 5 -55 This is in fact a bit more of a mood-depending instrumental album with songs rather than a song album, while it still sounds like a song album…. These are my favourite tracks. The piano piece is produced well with extra effects, and on the second track also her voice is threatened which makes this better. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/newsingers-23.html#anchor_677 * demo Beggin’ Your Pardon Miss Joan : Dear Nautilus -EP- (UK,2008)**°’ Tr.2, “Sketches” 4 min 1st hour------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tr.3, “Loosened” 5 min 9 -64 Nicely flowing, moody song music with voice(s) and guitar. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_787 * Locust Nalle : The Siren’s Wave (F,2008)**°° Tr.3, “Voi Ruusuni (o rose)” 10 min -74 In general this is as if Björk on acid, mixed with Joanna Newsom and Finish free folk, here is are also mixed with some far-eastern acid/psych folk fantasies, all are going into relatively weird territories. The band is related with weird and experimental chamber-folk band The One Ensemble of Daniel Padden and also, through member Chris Hladowski, with the semi-far eastern inspired acid folk group The Family Elan, both groups which received airplay before. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_781 * Dig.Ind. Twinsistermoon : Levels and Crossings (F,2008)**°’ Tr.5, “The Black Under” 2 min Tr.13,“Death Head Moth” 5 min 7 -81 Drone-folk mixed with simple song music sung with a very much Vasthi Bunyan alike voice (but sung by a male vocalist), with acoustic guitar. These are my favourite tracks. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_775 * Hand/Eye Stone Breath : Songs Of Moonlight And Rain (expanded edition)(US, 1998,pub.2008)**°° CD1: Tr.1, “Seed” 2 min Tr.6, “Evening Air” (COB) 3 min Tr.8, “My heart is an acorn buried in the black earth” 3 min Tr.12, “Listen,Listen” (Yogananda) 9 min (shortened to 3 min) 11 -92 Also the second album is reissued now with an extra bonus CD of other material from this period. Baritone whispery neo-pagan related inspirations of semi- ritualistic meditative neo-folk with a psych flavour. From this release on the bard Prydwyn became a steady participating member. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview4.html#anchor_110 * Gard.O.Del Aigues Vives : Water Of Seasons (D,1981;re.2004)***° LP: Tr.7, “Mediterranean Journey” 6 min -98 Good album of slightly progressive Folk-Rock with lyrics in English. Sounds like a more compact and simplified Carol Of Harvest. This is an instrumental. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/germany.html#anchor_293 * Zaiks Bayon : -First recordings 1971-1973- (D/CAM/VN,1971-1973)**°° Tr.6, “Bayon-suite” 13 min -111 Early days of this multi-cultural DDR band which combined different styles. On this symphonic track their talent shows off best. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/germany.html#anchor_292 * Proguebec Maneige (CAN,1975)****’ Tr.6, “Jean-Jacques” (unreleased version) 5 min -116 Finally this great symphonic album is released on cd. This is a bonus track which is a brilliant different version as the LP version. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Canada.html#anchor_79 * ProgQuebec Maneige : Les Porches de Notre-Dame (CAN,1974)***°’ Tr.1, “Les Porches de Notre-Dame” : overture 4 min 120 2nd hour------------------------------------------------------------------------ Als this second album now is released on CD in superior sound quality. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Canada.html#anchor_79 * ProgQuebec Jérôme Langlois Live 2006 + Thèmes (CAN,2006+1984/1976)**** CD1, Tr.1, “Le Cri 1/Arrivée” 9 min 9 Jerome Langlois from Maneige and therefore from the avant-prog group Lasting Wheep continued to make music. This latest concert proves that quality was kept high over the years. This new album was combined with the reissue of his 1984 album, and a commission from 1976. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/Canada.html#anchor_115 * Turly Crio Goldoolins : we B GD’s U B U (IS,2004-2006,pub.2008)**°° Tr.11, “Ah!I see horizons” 9 min (not last minute) 18 Compilation album with 13 old songs and 7 side-project tracks of this fine band which showed a mixture of styles on their first album (from sunshine pop to medieval folk), to psychfolk flavoured song music on their second album to more progressive work on their latest album. This almost symphonic progressive track comes from that 3rd album ; it is the group at their best and most progressive. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview11.html#anchor_198 * private Fernwood : Almeria (US,2008)****’ Tr.1, “Sandpiper” 6 min Tr.4, “Hungarian Holliday” 4 min Tr.5, “Athenia” 4 min 14 -32 This is the first real CD have from the band after 3 cdrs. Brilliant enjoyable filmic all-world music based upon acoustic sounds from instruments like bouzouki, guitar and sitar mostly. The fourth track, a waltz, also uses harmonium as one of the instruments. Highly recommended moody music, which works like a visit to the world, presented and covered in beauty. I enjoy this more and more with each listen. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/WORLD.html#anchor_74 * Migr.Worker Sacha Silva : Anatomy of a coup (SP/(IND)COL/UK,2008)***°° Tr.1, “Nostalgia (I)” 3 min Tr.4, “The Argument” 4 min Tr.6, “Things fall apart” 7 min Tr.7, “’block all roads’” 3 min 17-49 Second album by this flamenco guitarist, Indian singer and cello player & percussionist, not only searching for the perfect blend of Indian music and flamenco, but this time also reaching beyond their style with a political consciousness and a cultural awareness. Also in today’s world tyranny governments are able to take over control of countries and people, taking away their essences and freedom if they want to do so. The 6th track is more like powerful chamber music, new music as an inspired mixture of styles. Last track is based upon flamenco rhythms but is also new music with a new meaning, a consciousness provoking direction. Recommended. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/SITARFLAMENCO.html#anchor_47 * Fallout Hollins and Starr : Sidewalks Talking (US,1970,re.2008)***°' Tr.1, “Talking to myself” 3 min Tr.2, “Krishna Dov” 2 min Tr.10, “Digress” 3 min 8-57 Reissue of a highly original, clever progressive work of song music (with some influence of a hippie mind?), with lots of surprising moves and psychedelic improvisational instrumentals in between the songs, and some variation in style. “Digress” is a funny anti-rationalising song followed by liberating thunder and rain…. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/psych2.html#anchor_237 3rd hour------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Fallout Country Funk : Sidewalks Talking (US,1970,re.2008)***° Tr.1, “Apart of me” 4 min Tr.2, “Phoebe (Mourning Pink)” 3 min 7 -65 Surprisingly fine and rather strong but unknown Westcoast styled album, which sounds more often somewhat close to CSN(&Y). Elsewhere I also notice a 60s style influence. These two tracks are my favourites. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/psych2.html#anchor_243 * Transubstans Siena Root : Far From The Sun (S,2008)**°' Tr.9, “Long Way From Home” 11 min -76 Sienna Root I have considered one of the better promises from the progressive scene and in a post-70’s progrock style. After having toured much their style began to sound more straight forward, like a 70s heavy bluesrock live band with some progressive/psychrock interest, but not too much time to work things out better and calmer. Only the last track is a bit calmer, with use of organ passages. I don’t consider this style change as a real improvement, but ok, I will still show you this favourite track, which I think is really fine. Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/sweden2.html#anchor_159 * Find.Keep. Ersen (TÜ,1973-1977comp.2008)****° Tr.3, (with Mogollar) “Kozan Dagi” 5 min Tr.6, (with Kardaslar) “Yine Seni Tanirim” 5 min Tr.10,“Dostlar Beni Hatirlasin” 4 min Tr.14,(with Dadaslar) “Bir Aylik Bir Yoksulluk Bir Öllüùm” 5 min 19 -94 Great compilation featuring lots of Ersen’s Turkish rock singles. He’s one of my favourite Anadolu Pop singers. He has a small arabesque flavour in his singing, and a beautiful soft sensibility. Ersen’s music is absolutely essential for any Turkish rock music collection. These are my personal favourite tracks to lift out this compilation. These tracks also prove how talented and progressive his accompanying bands were. The sound on the album is great. It is the only official CD available of Ersen (There exist however a Korean bootleg of Ersen’s first album, which besides is also a compilation of singles). Review : http://progressive.homestead.com/turkey.html#anchor_118 * bootleg Baris Manço : Dünden Bugünde (TÜ,1971)***°’ Tr.4, “Küçük Bir Gece Müzigi” (Mozart) 3 min Lazy bootleg CD reissue without info. 1st album, with songs recorded between 1968 and 1971. A fine Anadolu pop/folk/rock album. This track was inspired on Mozart but is Anadolu psych-rock. Info on Baris : http://progressive.homestead.com/Baris_entry.html * bootleg Baris Manço (with Kurtulan Express): 2023 (TÜ,1975)****° Tr.8, “Tavuklara kissst de!” 3 min Tr.9, “Kol Basti!..” 8 min 11-108 Second lazy bootleg CD reissue without info. Official reissue will follow soon, so better be patient for a better version. A unique album with use of lots of analogue synthesisers. Also this track is a kind of fun making track with a Turkish theme, and played by saz and wahwah guitar. It almost predates Baba Zula’s experiments of later date. The keyboard driven tracks I will airplay when the real reissue is out. His 1979 LP ‘Yeni Bir Gun’ I still like, and features tracks that are like a response and follow-up to the 2023 album. Songs fitting as well but not published on both LP’s are “Hamburger” and “2025”. The second track is Anadolu Rock, and features a jazzy guitar improvisation. Info on Baris : http://progressive.homestead.com/Baris_entry.html * Voltay Ayyuka (2007)***° Tr.1, “Hamam Sefasi” 4 min -112 Fine new Turkish Anadolu Rock with psych, heavy rock and very small reggae?? touches (and tango on track 10). I airplayed one other track before in last radio show. This is heavy new Anadolu Rock. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/Turkprogreview.html#anchor_133 * Voltay V.A.: Türkiye'den Alternatif Rock (TÜ,2007)**°’ Tr.8, Grangulez : “Karen” 3 min Tr.12,Dehr-I Yalan : “Yangin Var” 3 min -118 If time left : Tr.6, Neon : “Anlamsiz” 5 min Compilation of the new alternative rock bands which are now playing in clubs. Most groups sound like post-80s alt/wave-rock bands with bass, drums, guitar. Grangulez is different for its use of keyboards, and heavy surf-rock influence. Also Dehr-I Yalan is different, and shows a definite punk influence in their sound. Has this song reminiscences to the Dutch folk song “Jan Mijne Man”??? ;) Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/TURKCOMPI.html#anchor_53 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homepage radioshow : http://psychefolk.com/ Playlists : http://psychefolk.com/2008.html Newsletter with new reviews and playlists with some audio links : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psychevanhetfolk/ Subscribe: psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
